MURIC Tackles Lagos Govt Over Hijab Ban

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) yesterday has petitioned both international and local human rights organizations on the denial of the fundamental human rights of female Muslim students in Lagos State who are being obstructed from using Hijab.

This is coming just as the Executive Chairman of the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) Disu Kamor voiced his shock over the decision of the Lagos State Ministry of Education to prevent students in public schools from using the Hijab (the obligatory female Muslim head covering).

The petition signed by MURIC Director Professor Ishaq Akintola was sent to the Human Rights Watch based in New York, Amnesty International based in London, Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) based in London, National Human Rights Commission, Abuja, and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives.

In the petition titled "Petition against Lagos State Government for Violating the Fundamental Rights of Muslims Living in the State", the rights group, which noted its persistent advocacy on peace in Nigeria and beyond, believed that every human person has the right to freedom of worship.

The group asked the rights groups to intervene in the crisis that is now brewing in Lagos State after the government had ignored petitions sent to them over the Muslims'demand for the right for their female children to use Hijab in government schools.

Kamor said rather than speak on behalf of the Constitution she swore an oath to defend, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye is taking the state in a course of confrontation down the dead end of religious intolerance.
