Boko Haram:CAN - Buhari Portrays Himself As Nigeria's Enemy

Former Head of State, Gen Muhammadu Buhari has continued to receive flaks for his position on the insecurity problems plaguing the nation, with the Abia State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), saying that Buhari has transformed himself into a very unpatriotic Nigerian.

Speaking with THISDAY in Umuahia, Abia State, the state chairman of CAN, Bishop Goddy Okafor, said that the position taken by Buhari and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) over the proscription of the terrorist group, Boko Haram, was appalling.

"Buhari needs to be called to order. He has been portraying himself as enemy of Nigeria," he said, adding that whoever wanted peace and unity in Nigeria should applaud President Goodluck Jonathan for the measures he has taken to tackle the menace of Boko Haram's terrorist attacks.

According to Bishop Okafor,-well meaning Nigerians had, for long, expected Mr. President to take action against the Islamist insurgents. He noted that the situation was getting so bad that "some of us at a time confronted the security agencies and asked them if they were actually advising Mr. President well."

The CAN chairman, who is also the President of Peculiar Peoples International Ministry, said that it was a sign of relief for Nigerians when President Jonathan took action and declared state of emergency on Boko Haram infested states and went ahead to proscribe the dreaded Islamic sect.

On the plight of Christians in the North, Okafor said that they needed understanding and commendation for stoically bearing the terrorist attacks by Boko Haram without resorting to retaliation, which could have plunged the nation into a conflagration.

"We should see what has been happening in the North as persecution (of Christians)," he said, adding that it was unfortunate that a section of the Islamic adherents were yet to see other Nigerians of different faith as brothers and that all Nigerians were one.

Bishop Okafor said that traditional rulers have a crucial role to play in putting in place sustainable peace in the North given their moral and religious influence in the northern part of the country.
