Africa: Media Release On the Utterances and Insults By Abathembu King Buyelakhaya Dalindyebo

PRESS RELEASE

The National House of Traditional Leaders (NHTL) has noted with serious concern, the continuous public utterances and insults made by AbaThembu King Buyelakhaya Dalindyebo, Ah! Zwelibandze, that seeks to undermine the integrity of the institution of traditional leadership in South Africa.

The NHTL therefore, distances itself from such utterances, which are not in line with the African culture, traditions and customs as well as the code of conduct as provided for in the Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Act of 2009.

As a statutory body, the National House of Traditional Leaders has undertaken to engage kings on this matter, as part of its mandate. The House is mindful of the individual's right to freedom of speech. The National House holds the notion that respect is the cornerstone of African culture. These utterances and insults are foreign and unacceptable to African culture.

Furthermore, the NHTL will be deliberating with kings on the activities and programmes of the House and of the institution of traditional leadership at large, as well as matters relating to service delivery and development of traditional communities. In this way, the House will be contributing towards and driven by the traditional leadership objective of uniting our people and building a more cohesive society.

In the spirit of Madiba, Ah! Dalibunga, the NHTL hereby appeals to all South Africans to work together as a way of support to former State President and the father of the nation. South Africa belongs to all who live in it, regardless of culture, tradition, custom, race, colour, creed, religion, gender, class, caste, or any other social markers of difference.

Ethnicity, religion, language, social and cultural practices are elements which enrich human civilization, adding to the wealth of our diversity. South Africa is a proud rainbow nation, united in its diversity.

The NHTL hereby extends its word of appreciation to the nation and the world at large, for the ongoing support and prayers for Madiba. The NHTL wishes Madiba well as he responds positively to treatment.
