Catholic Bishops Conference Rebrands

Nairobi — The Catholic Bishops of Kenya have changed their name from Kenya Episcopal Conference (KEC) to the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) in a colorful event at the Consolata School grounds in Westlands. The event was presided over by His Eminence John Cardinal Njue, Chairman, KCCB assisted by over a dozen bishops and over 50 priests.

During the launch, a 10 year strategic plan was revealed that will guide the implementation of the conference's vision and mission.

"The change of name is strategic since it gives clarity and identity and offers chance to witness the sanctity, pastoral and development interventions of the church" said John Cardinal Njue.

The secretary general of the KCCB, Rev Fr Vincent Wambugu said that the change had been inspired by the desire to have an identity that is striking and clearly defines what the conference is about.

"There are many Protestant churches going by the name Episcopal Churches, and therefore when we talked about Episcopal Conference, it was easily misunderstood as one of those Evangelical Episcopal Churches" said Fr Wambugu.

Before the launch, a Holy mass was held at Consolata Shrine parish church and was attended by hundreds of Christians including bishops from protestant churches in the country.

In his homily the Cardinal asked Christians to pray for the country especially professionals as they do what they are called to do.

Citing the day's reading the Cardinal further added that the role of KCCB is to answer the questions of Jesus that he was asked by Paul and Peter of whom they say he was.

KCCB is the assembly of the Catholic Bishops in Kenya united and exercising together their pastoral offices over Christ's faithful, as shepherds of the Catholic Church in Kenya which they promote by forms and means of apostolate suitable to the circumstances of place and time, in accordance with the law, to promote the greater good which the Church offers to all mankind .

The members of the Conference are all the Diocesan Bishops of Kenya, Military Ordinariate, the Vicar Apostolic and Apostolic Prefecture, Apostolic Administrator and Diocesan Administrators, all Coadjutor Bishops, Auxiliary Bishops and other Titular Bishops who exercise a special office assigned by the Apostolic See of the KCCB in Kenya.
