Cleric Hails Law Banning Same Sex Marriage

The recently-enacted law by the National Assembly stipulating a 14-year jail term for same-sex marriage in the country received a boost Saturday as the Anglican Bishop of Ika Diocese , Dr. Peter I. Onwekpe endorsed the law.

Onwekpe, who gave the endorsement in Owa -Oyibu , in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State during the solemnisation between Onyemakor Obiagbena and Ismaila Yesufu, described homosexuality as an aberration and repugnant to the word of God and African beliefs.

He said "Same-sex marriage is against natural order of creation, it is against the laws of our religions, and it is against our African custom and traditions." .

He said marriage is a fulfillment of God's design and ordained by God, adding that marriage is not between man and man or woman and woman. He said it was not God's design for man to marry his fellow man, saying it is unholy for man to have sexual relationship with same sex.

He advised the couple to not only love themselves as God loved the church but to have a forgiving spirit, saying that was the only way they can build a united and trusted family with the fear of God .

The event was attended by government functionaries, media practitioners, politicians businessmen, traditional rulers and community leaders.
