Lagos — Catholic Faithful in Holy Family Catholic Church, Ewupe area of Ogun State have launched a N50 million appeal fund to commence the building of a befitting church in the community.
At a press briefing held at the church site in Ewupe, the Convener and Mother of Church, Mrs Eve Enakimio said the idea of building for the Lord came as a result of her encounter with Late Rev. Fr Cosmas Famoroti, the Parish Priest of St Peter Catholic Church who instructed her to the lead the congregation in carrying out the project.
"Before his death, he assigned me a responsibility to handle raising funds for the land on which the plank shed structure of worship was occupying. It was one of its out stations. Today, part of the land was purchased. The worship centre is still on-going. The structure where this happens remains a glorified shed though a shade better than what we started with," Enakimio said.
The Otta Parish priest underwhich the church is situated, Revd. Fr, Emmanuel Lewis described the project as a very important one for the spiritual upliftment of the congregation.
"We are hoping that all well meaning Nigerians and lovers of God will come to the aid of this young church as we plan to to raise fund to build a church that has been acclaimed to be a 'big church' to God's glory. This is the dream of members of Holy Family Catholic Church, this is the dream of Our late Reverend Father Cosmas Famoroti," the Rev. Fr. Said.
Also speaking, the chairman laity council for the church, Emmanuel Dibiagwu said the catholic faithful in Ewupe community have been longing for a church of their own as far back as 2008. He lamented that for catholics who wish to perform early morning mass had to travel long distances to Lagos to before they can worship.
"Before this church came into being the churches close by were either in Lagos or some distant places in Ogun State. Going to church on Sundays was nightnarish because of the distance you have to cover before getting to the nearest. Three families came like the biblical three wise men and came up with the idea to start a worship centre. It was a journey of fishers of men and what we have today speaks volume about how well God can use his people," Dibiagwu said.
